Maka'ala da Pueo Educational Visits

Pueo is the word for owl and Maka'ala is Hawaiian for "eyes wide awake: watchful".  It is the chosen name for the owl mascot who represents the Park Watch Program throughout Maui County and admonishes to "Keep a Watchful Eye on Your Park!"

With help from Maka’ala 'da Pueo', children are asked to respect our parks and they are shown how litter and graffiti or vandalism hurts everyone.  Maka’ala visits schools and youth recreation sites to encourage keiki to be observant and responsible park patrons and to tell their parents, police, or park officials if they witness wrongful activities. The children learn that when they do good things in the park like pick up or throw away their rubbish in an appropriate way, Maka'ala is happy!  When Maka'ala sees people hurting his parks or trashing the 'aina, he is sad.

The Park Watch Program purchased an owl costume and educational materials so that Maka'ala the Owl can visit schools in 'person' like the Neighborhood Crime Watch Program does with McGruff the Crime Dog.   Educational material will include brochures, stickers, magnets, and coloring books.  All will carry Park Watch logo and contact information.
